IoT BLE Beacons

BLE-Beacons

As per different demands of real use cases, we have developed some types of iBeacon & Eddystone beacons, which are all based on nRF52 BLE5.0 chip solutions and support iBeacon (UUID, Major, Minor), Eddystone (UID, Instance iD, NameSpace iD, URL, TLM, Info) and SOS multi-packet data broadcast.

What is a Bluetooth beacon and how does a Bluetooth beacon work?

Beacon originally means a lighthouse or a direction indicator, working as a positioner/navigator for the boats in sea or the aerocrafts in air, so it is easily understood that a Bluetooth beacon is a small Bluetooth signal/data transmitter that is attached to an object and transmits a signal to the receivers, so that it plays the important role on wireless tracking, positioning, navigating, usw. The beacon broadcasts a simple unique ID, that is then identified by a receiver. The receiver, which can be a smartphone or a gateway, pulls the related data from the cloud. The signal broadcast by the beacon includes its ID, firmware, battery level, and potentially other data such as the data of sensors. It does not include location data like a GPS tracker, which is determined by the signal strength at the receiver.

This allows, for example, a museum’s app to provide a visitor with information about an exhibit sent directly to their phone without them needing to stop and scan a QR code. Beacons can also be used for indoor navigation, tracking (for another example, when you walk into a trade show booth, it might start playing the promotional videos), and triggering automated events for security.

Bluetooth beacons are usually used to work as a part of system, which may have to include an App. Users consent to receive notifications when they download the App, besides, they also have to turn Bluetooth on when using BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) beacons. By the way, beacons are stationary, while tags move, which is also the most obvious difference between BLE beacons and BLE tags (More on the tech differences in other pages).
